I worked at a group home. There was a woman, who was severely mentally retarded and Nurse scrub life with my scrub bestie shirt. Her husband was fooling around with her this was in the 50’s, taking advantage of her cognitive disability, and she got pregnant. He was forced to marry her and they went on to have 4 more kids. He eventually dumped her off at a group home, where she was rarely visited by her family. I also met a couple, both had moderate cognitive impairment. They were married and had a wonderful relationship in a sort of assisted living facility. They had their own apt. In a complex where help was provided as needed. They had lots of support from their families and lived a relatively normal life. If someone has more than a mild impairment, then it really would be taking advantage of them for a “normal” person to be in a relationship.
