It’s very easy to imagine an ancient ancestor to both us and chimps flipping a branch looking for berries or something else of value and discovering something that is unexpected, but resembling other dangerous or unknown things. A snake? Spider? Grunt, smack it, jump away, all before it consciously considers if what it saw was dangerous or harmful or not. This is why it is offensive to others.
